A Sunrise Elopement in Zion National Park
There is something about Zion at first light that makes everything feel sacred. The canyon walls glow amber before the sun even crests the rim, the air is still cool, and the whole park belongs to almost no one. For Kailey and Jordan, that quiet was exactly what they wanted when they said their vows.
We met at the trailhead at 5:30am — just the two of them, their officiant, and me with my camera. Kailey had her dress tucked into hiking boots, Jordan wore a linen suit, and they both had that specific kind of calm that only comes when you've stripped a wedding day down to its absolute essentials: each other.
Why Zion is one of my favorite places to photograph
I'm based in Hurricane, which means Zion is practically my backyard. I've photographed there in every season and every kind of light, and it never gets old. The sandstone catches golden hour in a way that feels almost cinematic — warm, layered, and completely unlike anywhere else in the world.
For elopements especially, Zion offers something rare: genuine seclusion even in one of the most visited national parks in the country. If you know when and where to go, you can have the canyon entirely to yourselves.
Kailey and Jordan chose a spot along the Virgin River where the light filters through the canyon walls in long, soft shafts. By the time the ceremony ended and we started walking, the canyon was filling with that perfect warm glow that makes Southern Utah look like it was made for photographs — because honestly, it was.
Planning your own Zion elopement
If you're dreaming of something like this, here are a few things worth knowing. Zion requires a permit for weddings and elopements — I can help point you in the right direction on that. Sunrise sessions mean an early alarm, but you'll have the park largely to yourself and the best light of the day. And yes, you can absolutely wear a wedding dress on a trail. Kailey did it effortlessly.

I'm based right here in Hurricane, Utah — a 20-minute drive from Zion's south entrance — which means I know these locations deeply and can get you to the right light at the right time. If a Zion elopement is on your mind, I'd love to hear about it.
